Duke Advances to Elite Eight Mar 27 2010

Duke Analysis

Sent: Sat Mar 27 08:23:24 2010

It was a wonderful night of hard-fought basketball action in the grandest of football stadiums and in the state where everything does seem to be a little bigger as over 45,000 people looked on to watch Duke improve its record to 32-5 and advance to the Elite Eight of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Note from Nut:

Great win. But I wish Zoubek wouldn't jump way out on outside so aggressively and pick up those cheesy fouls (2 right at beginning of second half). They need him in games without those fouls so he can play tough under basket

Duke Topples FSU January 28, 2010

It was a grind-it-out and celebrate win last night in Cameron as the Blue Devils toppled a strong and physical Florida State squad, 70-56, to up its ACC record to 5-2 and a 17-3 overall mark. It was a team effort across the board and most especially on the defensive end as Duke forced 22 turnovers and FSU shot below 35 percent from the field in the second half. Jon Scheyer led the scoring attack with 22 points while Kyle Singler tossed in 20 points and grabbed a team-high seven boards.

Note from Nut:

Scheyer"s assist to turnover ratio is dropping fast as he plays more minutes per game.

Duke Earns Huge ACC Road Win January 24, 2010

Duke Analysis

It was an old-fashioned and classic Duke Basketball road win as the ESPN primetime audience looked on and 10,000 orange-clad fans screamed while the Blue Devils showed collective resolve and defensive magnificence in recording a 60-47 win at Clemson last night. The victory brought a wonderful post game celebration as the players and coaches alike shared in this big win - moving Duke's record to 16-3 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.

Note from Nut:

Note the minutes played by Duke starters below. They have no chance of surviving into March as K will burn them out again.

Things are great here. A nice article on Jon Scheyer and the announcement on this year’s Duke Children’s Hospital holiday cards program.

Note from Nut:

Duke should play zone defense with this team which is very much a European type team. If they don't they'll get killed by quick guards. I'm sure they won't since they don't change their game to their personnel.

I thought you would be interested to know that Gerald Henderson has signed with an agent and will keep his name available in the NBA Draft on June 25th. We will be cheering him on and wishing Gerald and his family the best!

I wouldn't take him from what I saw.

The Sweet Taste of Victory - Duke Advances March 22, 2009

Duke Analysis
Sent: Sunday, March 22, 2009 8:44 AM

Last night in a raucous and crazy Greensboro Coliseum, Duke captured its 30th win of the season with an electrifying 74-69 win over Texas to advance to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time this decade.

Note from Nut:

Great win to get monkey of not making sweet 16 off Duke's back. See you in Boston

Elliot William's defense at the end was great. He really shut down their driving to the basket totally. Amazed Nolan Smith seems incapable of doing that--they must have driven by him 3 or 4 times in a row. Hope Williams is going to guard that kid from NYC Fisher when he is in for Villanova as he was unbelievable in driving to hoop.

Scheyer played great defense on Abrams.

Hope Zoubek can stay in game more minutes without picking up stupid fouls. He really makes a difference against certain big players and had a good game when you look at his numbers per minute. He seems to get called for a moving pick every game and always bodies players while they are shooting and gets called for foul.

Saturday Update - Duke Basketball Feb 14 2009

Duke Analysis
Sent: Sat Feb 14 13:39:40 2009

We are getting ready to take off for Boston in a couple of hours and the Blue Devils have been busy preparing for the key ACC road trip, including a workout this morning and a shootaround tonight at Conte Forum. Tomorrow night’s game tips at 5:30 on FoxSportsNet. There hasn’t been much to send out this week since the local papers have continually been focused on the negative and the ludicrous study of a technical foul since Wednesday’s game.

Note from Nut:

The only way Duke can beat a team like UNC or UConn is to play a zone or matchup zone. They don't have the quickness outside or strength inside to play those guys one on one. I wish Coach K was more flexible in changing his play strategies for the opponents now that he no longer has superior talent. He is too locked into his ways--not the sign of a good coach.

Sometimes a coach has to adjust his defense to his personnel. Woody Hayes and Bobby Knight failed to do that late in their careers- maybe because. they had been so successful early. But the key to success is being flexible with your strategies and surprising the other team.

Thursday Morning Update February 05, 2009

Duke Analysis
Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2009 9:50 AM

On a morning like this one, I’m going straight to the head coach to sum it up:
"This was a 27 point loss. You have to take responsibility of what you've done. What you do with the responsibility determines where you are. Don't make any excuses."

Everyone is struck by the uncommon occurrence of a loss like this – a true staple and standard of the program in always competing and fighting down to the final shot in every game. So this morning many are recollecting the 30-point 1990 NCAA Championship game loss to UNLV – and of course great things came from that in forming the bond towards two straight national championships.

The stakes of that game made it feel different to me so I looked up the last time we lost on an opponent’s home court by 27 or more. I knew it wasn’t in my 22 years here. It turns out it was a 31-point loss at Wake Forest on January 18, 1984. And again, there is no doubt from the stories I know – that it was games like that one that bonded that group of players together in making an NCAA run that year and eventually playing for the title two years later and becoming the winningest team in NCAA history.

Note from Nut:

Very tough game. Hopefully, your analysis will be correct re NCAA run.

One question--though it wouldn't have mattered the way the way they were prepared to play and played--in breaking the press why wasn't Zoubek simply standing at the foul line extended for a high pass in that he could then return to cutters? I thought that was standard way of breaking this press with your tallest guy, particularly where he is a decent passer.

The most important thing is these great articles on two of our former players with some influential and powerful friends.

Reggie Love with Barack Obama and Grant Hill and his wife, Tamia, with Oprah Winfrey. Wow! The world of Duke Basketball – you just never know what will come next!

Amazing what you can do with a Duke education.

Duke Crushes Shaw November 02, 2007

Duke Analysis
Sent: Friday, November 02, 2007 7:56 AM

If anyone had questioned if we were going to be a running and pressing team in 2007-08, our first exhibition game of the year should squelch those old beliefs as Duke ran its way to a 134-55 victory over Robert Brickey’s Shaw Bears in Cameron last night. The “Runnin’ Blue Devils” featured 10 players scoring in double-figures with its two big men – Lance Thomas and Kyle Singler - combining to make 16-of-17 shots from the field. Shaw had a couple of injuries to deplete its lineup but, nonetheless, this brand of Duke Basketball is fun to watch and you can see the players really enjoying themselves out on the court.

Tomorrow we take on Division II national champion Barton College at 5 pm in Cameron.

Note from Nut:

Sounds like they have a real powerhouse. I'm sure Shaw was highly regarded

McRoberts Declares for NBA Draft March 22, 2007

I think I’m a couple of hours behind on the release of the news this morning that Josh McRoberts has decided to declare himself eligible for the NBA Draft this summer – so I apologize if you heard it elsewhere other than right here. We obviously wish him and his family the very best and look forward to watching Josh’s professional career blossom in the years ahead.

Note from Nut:

They'll really stink next year.

We are back in Durham on this Friday afternoon – so you know it’s not good news for this email during the ACC Tournament. Needless to say, it was a numbing overtime loss last night to N.C. State as the Blue Devils fell 85-80.

Monday Morning Update March 05, 2007

Duke Analysis
Sent: Monday, March 05, 2007 5:27 AM

Not sure where to start on this one – but needless to say it was not a happy weekend around these parts. Of course, just going into Chapel Hill is enough to bring you down – but then added on top of it was an outstanding performance by the Tar Heels as they took away an 86-72 win in the regular season finale.

As you know, however, the only thing anyone is talking about is the final 15 seconds of the game when Tyler Hansborough left with a bloody nose. I’m very glad to hear that it was not broken and also relieved to read this morning in the paper that he was back on the court joking around with his teammates about the play and the hit.

I can tell you first hand – being in the locker room and hearing Gerald tell the team – that there is absolutely zero chance that his hit was intentional or malicious. In fact, quite the opposite as this game was played with intensity from start to finish – and you can plainly see that Gerald is turning away from him and has his eyes closed. Of course, I did myself no favor this morning by listening to two minutes of talk radio and hearing the hosts going off on how Gerald deserves to be suspended and them replaying the Tar Heel radio network where it was described as a closed fist punch. WOW!

I am still confounded on how the referees termed this a “fight” - making sure that not only Gerald was thrown out of the game but would serve an automatic one-game suspension. It is the first time I have ever seen a referee crew announce suspensions – and they did it live on television too. Amazing.

Note from Nut:

Thanks for all your reporting during year.

I do wish Coach K would play more players more minutes so starters wouldn't run out of gas as they seem to. Thomas and Zoubek were basically not used much. Henderson has come on and looks like a terrific player.

I remember back to Georgetown win and how effective team was against strong inside game with both McRoberts and Zoubek in lineup and wish we did more of that. McRoberts simply can not match up with strong inside presence like Hansbrough. He has quickness but not adequate size or strength. Zoubek can really clog up middle. Also may need to change up defenses. In both Md and Carolina games the other team looked far superior (although by lots of effort we stayed close somehow) and didn't look like we could play them straight up

Duke Tames Tigers on the Road February 23, 2007

Duke Anaylsis
Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 8:52 AM

It was another happy trip home as the Blue Devils won a huge 71-66 win at Clemson last night – the 21st straight win over the Tigers. It was certainly a roller coaster ride as we opened an incredible 24-point lead in the first half thanks to arguably our best 20 minutes of the year and then made some huge shots and plays in the second frame to hold off the hard-charging Tigers for the win.

Note from Nut:

Unbelievable game. First 20 minutes Duke played great. Last 20 minutes UGH. Never saw so many uncontested lay-ups as in 2nd half. Defense fell apart. No one switched off, etc. One thing is odd about this team. Every other Duke team I have watched always was terrific in coming out in 2nd half fired up and winning the first 5 minutes of 2nd half, which is big since it sets tone for rest of game. In each of last two games, this team has come out in 2nd half totally flat and lost momentum in the first five minutes setting tone for close games.

Big Win Over BC February 15, 2007

Duke Analysis
Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2007 8:11 AM

And how sweet it is! Duke played inspired basketball for 40 minutes and it took a collective team effort in recording a 78-70 win over Boston College, the ACC’s first place squad last night in Chestnut Hill. It completed a season sweep of the Eagles and propelled the Blue Devils back to fifth place at the .500 mark in league play.

The players and the coaching staff were so pumped afterwards – it was a great, great locker room. Very sweet! Even getting back on campus at 5:30 am couldn’t dampen the spirit of the team as the iPods were playing and Coach K delivered a hearty congratulations and bid them a needed day off.

Note from Nut:

Great win.

Few comments.

McRoberts disappeared offensively in second half. Can't consistently win unless he is aggressive scorer.

Henderson, who is a great offensive player and can create for himself, was used to little and McClure, who is a good defensive player, was used too much. I was glad when he fouled out, as there was a period when BC almost caught up that ball was in McClure's hands for three consecutive shots (no points and two missed foul shots). He was player least likely to score on floor. Note Henderson successfully took the ball to the hoop when he came in.

Going from an offensive that is in synch and functioning to slow down (playing not to lose) with a big lead was almost disaster last night and in Clemson game and was disaster in Va game that started 4 game losing streak. Not sure why they do it. it's like prevent defense in football. You lose your aggressiveness. Dickie V was all over this on TV. If going to do this need creator like Henderson in lineup.

Z is going to be needed against teams with big lineups. he was good against NC. He will need minutes to get some confidence and play better in games--like Casey Sanders who got minutes when Boozer was hurt.

Coach K's 700th and Duke's 20th This Season February 19, 2007

Duke Analysis
Sent: Monday, February 19, 2007 8:31 AM

It was a special day in Cameron as the Blue Devils secured a hard fought 71-62 win over Georgia Tech and Coach K registered a remarkable 700th win at Duke. He becomes only the 8th coach in NCAA history to win that many at one institution. And the best part for all of us – he was totally surprised and caught him off guard – which made the ceremony on the court and after the game in the locker room even sweeter. He certainly deserved and earned a “moment” – and I think he got one yesterday.

Note From the Nut:

Phenomenal first half. Clearly Duke was aggressor and took charge with great full court pressure. McClure played really well and Paulus has become a leader and key guy. Team is not the same when he is not at point..

Was surprised took full court pressure off in second half and let Georgia Tech become aggressor with their full court pressure. They had an easier time setting up their offense in second half and almost got back to even game.

Monday Morning Recap Mon Feb 5 2007

Duke Analysis
Sent: Mon Feb 05 08:35:01 2007

A sunny and brisk start to the day here in Durham and we needed to see a little sunshine this morning. Hooray! But phew – it’s been a tough few days with another last possession loss piled on to the Blue Devils Sunday afternoon in Cameron. This time it was Florida State that battled back from a 17-point first half deficit and made the big plays down the stretch to secure the win. Making this one real painful at home is that we had the last shot at the bucket – two shots – but they just didn’t go in. Not meant to be.

As you would expect, Coach K eloquently addressed the team after the game, telling them that as hard as this loss was, they must move on to the next play, the next game. Win or lose – next play. And through this adversity in sport - the character of a champion and the growth required to becoming an adult will come through during these times. They need to keep working hard. It was a great life lesson from the locker room as he also reminded the kids of perspective – there is another day for this team – and that doesn’t always happen in real life.

Well the Northbrook jinx comtinues. Last time Duke missed NCAA tourney, kid from Northbrook on team was Chris Collins. 1995-6. Now they have John Scheyer also Nohbrook High. With a 5-4. ACC record and two likely losses to NC Duke will have to go 3-2 to end up at 8-8 in conf which probably will get them as 8 or 9 seed. That means no sweet 16. This year To do this they have to win both games and win on road against Clemson, BC or Md. Given way they played at home this year they may not win both home. One is against Md. Not sure who is other. Looks like they have good shot at not making tourney if they keep losing close ones like two this week, both of which they should have won

The Blue Devils fell to Marquette 73-62 in the championship game of the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo., a few hours ago (I mean last night).  We certainly had our opportunities and led for most of the game but it wasn’t to be as Marquette’s strong and talented backcourt led the Golden Eagles to the title.

Thanks for all your reports and have a great Thanksgiving . Still wish they played zone defense sometimes. As Europeans have learned, zone defense allows you to beat quicker teams you couldn't play man on man against. I watched the first 1/2 and from what I saw expected they would lose.
