Duke Analysis

It was a wonderful night of hard-fought basketball action in the grandest of football stadiums and in the state where everything does seem to be a little bigger as over 45,000 people looked on to watch Duke improve its record to 32-5 and advance to the Elite Eight of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Note from Nut:

Great win. But I wish Zoubek wouldn't jump way out on outside so aggressively and pick up those cheesy fouls (2 right at beginning of second half). They need him in games without those fouls so he can play tough under basket

It was a grind-it-out and celebrate win last night in Cameron as the Blue Devils toppled a strong and physical Florida State squad, 70-56, to up its ACC record to 5-2 and a 17-3 overall mark. It was a team effort across the board and most especially on the defensive end as Duke forced 22 turnovers and FSU shot below 35 percent from the field in the second half. Jon Scheyer led the scoring attack with 22 points while Kyle Singler tossed in 20 points and grabbed a team-high seven boards.

Note from Nut:

Scheyer"s assist to turnover ratio is dropping fast as he plays more minutes per game.

It was an old-fashioned and classic Duke Basketball road win as the ESPN primetime audience looked on and 10,000 orange-clad fans screamed while the Blue Devils showed collective resolve and defensive magnificence in recording a 60-47 win at Clemson last night. The victory brought a wonderful post game celebration as the players and coaches alike shared in this big win - moving Duke's record to 16-3 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.

Note from Nut:

Note the minutes played by Duke starters below. They have no chance of surviving into March as K will burn them out again.

Things are great here. A nice article on Jon Scheyer and the announcement on this year’s Duke Children’s Hospital holiday cards program.

Note from Nut:

Duke should play zone defense with this team which is very much a European type team. If they don't they'll get killed by quick guards. I'm sure they won't since they don't change their game to their personnel.

I thought you would be interested to know that Gerald Henderson has signed with an agent and will keep his name available in the NBA Draft on June 25th. We will be cheering him on and wishing Gerald and his family the best!

Note from Nut:

I wouldn't take him from what I saw.

The Sweet Taste of Victory - Duke Advances March 22, 2009

Last night in a raucous and crazy Greensboro Coliseum, Duke captured its 30th win of the season with an electrifying 74-69 win over Texas to advance to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time this decade.

Note from Nut:

Great win to get monkey of not making sweet 16 off Duke's back. See you in Boston

Elliot William's defense at the end was great. He really shut down their driving to the basket totally. Amazed Nolan Smith seems incapable of doing that--they must have driven by him 3 or 4 times in a row. Hope Williams is going to guard that kid from NYC Fisher when he is in for Villanova as he was unbelievable in driving to hoop.

Scheyer played great defense on Abrams.

Hope Zoubek can stay in game more minutes without picking up stupid fouls. He really makes a difference against certain big players and had a good game when you look at his numbers per minute. He seems to get called for a moving pick every game and always bodies players while they are shooting and gets called for foul.

Saturday Update - Duke Basketball Feb 14 2009

We are getting ready to take off for Boston in a couple of hours and the Blue Devils have been busy preparing for the key ACC road trip, including a workout this morning and a shootaround tonight at Conte Forum. Tomorrow night’s game tips at 5:30 on FoxSportsNet. There hasn’t been much to send out this week since the local papers have continually been focused on the negative and the ludicrous study of a technical foul since Wednesday’s game.

Note from Nut:

The only way Duke can beat a team like UNC or UConn is to play a zone or matchup zone. They don't have the quickness outside or strength inside to play those guys one on one. I wish Coach K was more flexible in changing his play strategies for the opponents now that he no longer has superior talent. He is too locked into his ways--not the sign of a good coach.

Sometimes a coach has to adjust his defense to his personnel. Woody Hayes and Bobby Knight failed to do that late in their careers- maybe because. they had been so successful early. But the key to success is being flexible with your strategies and surprising the other team.
